Folks, some discussion going on about the length of the essay. I have checked everything I have from Mr Slosberg and can't find a word limit. Please, for me, keep your essays between 700 to 1000 words. They need to be very strongly focussed on the essay title. Title 1 is very clear that it is important you clarify what "explain" means. Use your own experience. Think about when your science, maths and TOK history teacher (or a "real" history teacher) explain things to you.
Title 2 is clear you need to explain what complete certainty is. Then you need to think about this in maths and another area of knowledge (so science, arts or history).
Can complete certainty be achieved?
Essay
When mathematicians, historians and scientists say that they have explained something, are they using the word 'explain' in the same way? (2007)
-OR-
Mathematicians have the concept of rigorous proof, which leads to knowing something with complete certainty. Consider the extent to which complete certainty might be achievable in mathematics and at least one other area of knowledge. (2008)
